One of the many aspects that stuck out to me in further researching the different areas of Downtown, Flushing its large immigrant population. Although there are many fascinating aspects of Downtown, Flushing, the thing that makes Flushing it's home is the people in it. In Professor Hum’s article, “From Dump to Glory, The Transformation of The Flushing River and Downtown Queens, Professor Hum emphasizes how important it is for immigrants who live in the Flushing area to have their voices heard. In her article, she states, “Our collaboration sought to better understand grassroots immigrant interests in order to better position advocacy organizations to ensure local community voice in the planning and development process” (171). It is very important for the residents in Flushing to understand what is happening to their communities and the small actions they can take to make a difference. There are many organizations such as the Minkwon Center that allows voices to be heard and actions to take place so that people do not lose their homes and other valuable aspects in their communities.
