Course Description:
Downtown Flushing has been in the center of an affordable housing crisis. In this class, you will join a team of community organizers and Flushing rent-stabilized tenants/activists to help preserve and protect rent stabilization in Flushing and NYC.
This class is designed to arm you with media production tools; therefore, your research can reach broader audiences with powerful visual storytelling methods. In this introductory course, students will learn the basics of video production skills: camera operation, sound, lighting, and editing. Through hands-on workshops, screenings, lectures, and readings, students will explore the conventional approaches to non-fiction video, students will learn to use moving images and sound for effective communication
Course Objectives:
• pre-produce, using the methods of brainstorming, researching, reaching out to potential interview subjects and plan the production strategies.
• demonstrate the ability to use portable video cameras, tripods, microphones, to conduct interviews and observational footage.
• use advanced post-production techniques and non-linear editing systems to create a short documentary.
• tell a story and show research result by using visual language
.
• Responsible journalism practices to create multi-media content that is socially engaged and reflects the diverse culture of the Flushing community.
REQUIRED READINGS AND COURSE MATERIALS:
All reading materials will be provided via PDF / web links
Required Supplies (see guidelines on class website):
1. An SD card with at least 32GB Capacity, Class 10 / UHS-II, UHS Speed Class 3
2. AA Battery 4, each /person.
3. PORTABLE USB 3.0 HARD DRIVE (at least 1TB) per group.
4. A pair of headphones
Each team need purchase the above items for this class.
Archiving and Backing up your work, save all of your notes and written work. Make sure you save and backup all of your projects. Deadlines will not be relaxed for technical difficulties.
Equipment
It is your responsibility to make equipment reservations in class, test all equipment, and to take care of the equipment. Equipment must be returned on time. When equipment is not returned on time, other students are unable to complete their work. Failure to take care of equipment or return equipment on time will result in the loss of equipment check out privileges.
Grade Breakdown:
Participation & Attendance 25% of the final grade
Writing Assignment(pitch, quiz,interview questions) 25% of the final grade
Film the Assignment 25% of the final grade
Final Project ` 25% of the final grade
Assignments:
1, Every Week write 1 blog post. Can be a film review, article review, Production blogs…
2, Every week have a production meeting. During the meeting, each team updates their production notes and sharing selection.
3, Group effort Project:

Lateness and Absences:
Attendance is mandatory. Medical emergencies must be documented to be excused. Being late to class negatively impacts your attendance record and will damage your grade. Three missed classes will result in the reduction of your grade by one full letter grade on top of the 10% for attendance! Medical emergencies must be documented to be excused.

Late assignments that are not excused by your teacher will have their grades reduced at the rate of one letter grade per week.
Please note that you must notify your instructor ahead of time if you cannot attend class on the day of filming, so we can arrange an alternate time for you. This will only be done in cases where there is a well-documented reason for missing the filming date.
