With the rapid rise of gentrification we are seeing an increase of foreign investors buying and monopolizing specific sections of neighborhoods. Downtown Flushing is the hot bed for Asian investors to pour in and watch their money circulate and grow while they displace those who had been calling Flushing home for more than two decades! In recent year the trend of forcing people out by having major construction down in and around the building while the tenants are still occupying their homes is on the rise. Unfortunately this strategy is very effective, a lot of people/ families are forced to move because of unbearable living conditions. It seems like the city is in favor of the new infrastructure such as condominiums, high end restaurants, trendy markets, and shopping centers. They could care less for those people that are well integrated in their own communities.

In the midst of housing a number of Flushing’s diverse residents are a myriad of low-income housing units, which are an amalgam of HUD apartments, Section 8 apartments, Public Housing apartments, non-profit senior and family low-income apartments, and low-income tax credit apartments (LIHTC). In several pockets within Flushing, there remains a lack in parity in equal housing opportunities for those without resources. Just last year, a complex called One Flushing became the biggest 100-percent affordable housing development to surface in Flushing in decades. Disenfranchised community members, such as those with disabilities have been reserved slots. And yet, the complex is more troublesome than meets the eye. The majority of New York residents are not Flushing residents eligible for a 1-bedroom apartment because they make too much or too little money. [Blog 1] Landlords scramble to make improvements before historic renters rights victories take effect in NYC

Flushing was awash with rapid renovations to buildings last month, many landlords rushing to complete any ongoing projects. This comes in the wake of 7 of the 9 bills championed by the organization Housing Justice for All passing through the New York state senate, greatly expanding the rights of renters throughout the state. The rapid rush to renovate may have come as a preemptive response to these bills making it through the state senate, indicating that landlords throughout the state realized that these bills had enough popular support to require the immediate renovation before the new regulations took effect. Dumpsters packed with debris to be hauled away were a common sight on the streets of Flushing.
